TOKYO 2020

Curator statement by Anna Ida Orosz

Similarly to the attentive optician in the film ‘Sore Eyes for Infinity’, animation is a tool to correct our loss of vision, short- or farsightedness, and even blindness to the non-concrete, non-observable things. Being able to display a whole array of moods and genres, comic or tragic, bitter or delightful, absurd or dramatic, the following selection of the most recent top-shelf European animated short films convey the world’s inhabitants’ overly varied subjective experience of being, their inner struggles and troubled human relationships in utterly unique, curiously complex and highly metaphorical ways. Among the subjects which these short films engage the viewer in are the bizarre nature of love and care (’Mr. Mare’), the coming-of-age with an unconventional identity (’Purple-boy’), the ephemerality of memory (’Per tutta la vita’), a damaged father-daughter relationship (’Daughter’), or the inability to be a superhero in a society running amok (’The Rain’). Thanks to the exceptionally broad grammar of animation, the selected short films can take highly individual and surprising, yet universally intelligible forms. The selection contains both meticulously crafted films, such as the paint-on-glass animation ’The Bird & the Whale’, and also casually drawn shorts like ’Hello Kitty’, or ’Linzer Lust’.

Mr. Mare

dir. Luca Tóth (HU) 2019 '19

Original Hungarian title: Lidérc úr

The film was made as a Hungarian-French co-production. The film was entirely made at Boddanim Studio in 11th district of Budapest, Hungary. This is only the second project made at the new studio – the previous was the short ‘The Fall of Rome’ by Balázs Turai, also produced by Boddah.

Looking at an x-ray image a young handsome man is horrified to learn that the weird, tumor-like lump on his chest is the top of a tiny plump man`s head. Nested in his body, he is waiting to be born… ’Mr. Mare’ is a surreal animated chamber play, set in a ‘haunted’ claustrophobic space, in which we witness the dynamics of unrequited love as we follow the relationship of an oddly codependent pair.

Luca Tóth is a Hungarian animation director, born in 1989, Budapest. She studied animation at Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design in Budapest. After receiving her BA diploma she went on studying at Royal College of Art for her Masters degree. Sore Eyes for Infinity

dir. Elli Vuorinen (FI) 2016 '12

An optician grows tired of seeing the world too clearly and understands her inevitable involvement in its faults.

Although her approach is often humorous films deal with significant themes of melancholy, solitude and hope. Vuorinen’s style is versatile – blending of minimal and handcrafted, she creates works that are both playful and bold. Different animation techniques inspire her. Vuorinen’s farm studio allows her to work with everything between large scale stop motion, installations and 2D computer animation. She graduated as an Animation Director from Turku Arts Academy. The Bird and the Whale

dir. Carol Freeman (IE) 2018 '7

The Bird and the Whale is a story about a young whale struggling to find his voice. After straying too far from his family to explore a shipwreck, he discovers it’s sole survivor, a caged songbird. Together they struggle to survive lost at sea. The Bird & the Whale was created using a near obsolete form of animation – paint-on-glass. It was created in Dublin, Ireland by a small majority female team. In June 2018, Carol was awarded a Silver Screen award at the Young Director Awards at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity.

Carol is a co-founder of indie stop-motion studio Paper Panther, based in Dublin Ireland. She works in a broad range of experimental techniques from hand-painted work to classic stop-motion puppets. Her debut short film The Bird & the Whale has been celebrated at festivals worldwide winning over 45 awards to date. She is currently developing her first feature film.
